We are a relatively small training scheme, which means that we pride ourselves on
our friendly, supportive, and common sense approach. There are good links between
the training practices, and our teaching aims to be personalised to help you develop
to your full potential.
The West Lancs area covers a wide range of populations, from the rural, to the market
town, to deprivation area. Hence the variety of patients we see is interesting and
There are very good links byroad and rail to Manchester, Liverpool and Preston,
all of which are around 30 minutes drive from Ormskirk, which itself is a University
town (Edge Hill), with opportunities for eating out and a social life you might expect!
Why West Lancashire
We are a long established training programme, with training practices in Ormskirk, Skelmersdale, Parbold, Upholland and Tarleton.
Our main linked hospitals are Southport and Ormskirk Hospitals, with Lancashire Care and Mersey Care Trusts for psychiatry posts.
Along with 4 or 6 month posts in paediatrics, Obstetrics and gynaecology, psychiatry and AED, we also have GP Plus posts. These posts allow you valuable GP experience in your ST1 and 2 years, by combining two posts in one—part of your week is spent in GP, and part in a specialty. Currently we have
palliative care / GP posts, and will also have ENT / palliative care as of August 2011.
We are a relatively small programme, with 4 GP ST3 doctors in placements in our training practices, 4 ST2 and 5
ST1 doctors on various hospital / GP Plus posts. We are expecting a gradual increase in trainees over the next 5 years.
ST3 doctors have dedicated time out of practice on a weekly basis during term times for group educational sessions. These are held in Preston, on a Wednesday morning.
ST1 and ST2 doctors meet fortnightly, out in a General Practice setting, in Beacon Primary Care’s seminar room, for an afternoon of networking, and educational activity. These sessions aim to help prepare you for your exams, and to orientate you towards your ST3 year.
